Home of the legendary Space Camp, along with dozens of exhibits highlighting achievements in American space travel, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center has collected nearly 1500 rockets, artifacts, and documents over its 50-year history. On display seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm, these testaments to our nation’s spirit of exploration and discovery make Huntsville a destination for all future astronauts.
Playing host to more than 300,000 visitors every year, the Huntsville Botanical Garden spans 112 acres with a seasonal butterfly house, a vast collection of flowers, and trails that show off trees, ferns, herbs, vegetables and more. In the summer, the Garden’s nature center provides gorgeous views of Little Smith Lake, along with an entire section devoted to the Flowering Dogwood – including a transplant that’s more than 100 years old. Bring your green thumb, or start on a new shade!
Head to the top of Monte Sano Mountain and take in the gorgeous views overlooking 2,000+ acres of wilderness to Huntsville’s east side. Monte Sano State Park features 14 cabins for rent – with their original stone fireplaces and wood floors – along with campsites, RV hookups, biking, and hiking trails, and a planetarium operated by the Von Braun Astronomical Society. Combined, these amenities make for a wonderful site to visit for both families, and solo outdoorsmen and women.
Built by eccentric doctor William Burritt in the late 1930s after the original construction made with straw insulation burned to the ground, William Burritt Mansion was willed to Huntsville for the purposes of building a museum in 1955. True to its estate’s wishes, the Mansion now plays host to a number of rotating exhibits on its second floor, showcasing the history and culture of Northern Alabama, while most of the original, enormous residence remains preserved for visitors.
Looking to stay close to town but still get some extra sunshine? Big Spring International Park in Downtown Huntsville is probably your best spot to stop. Built around the spring – “Big Spring” – that rooted Huntsville’s original settlers, the Park acts as a venue for the Panoply Arts Festival, live music events like Big Spring Jam, and even the Battle of the Buffalo charity buffalo wing cooking contest. Looking for a calmer respite in the middle of the week? The park’s Japanese Bridge is always open too for moments of reflection.
